Sal’s Favourite… Local Lockdown Treats!

This year I’ve set myself the challenge of doing as much of my Christmas shopping as possible with small, independent businesses, and I’m working on a fantastic local gift guide for you, coming very soon. But – and I hate to brag, because I’m so modest – I have also been selflessly supporting local by getting us a few extra treats too. Not all heroes wear capes.

So as a prequel to my Christmas retail edit, here’s a quick guide to the lovely local businesses who’ve been brightening our lockdown lately. If you need permission to treat yourself a little in these strange, bleak times, then consider it given – frankly, we all deserve a few indulgences right now.  Without further ado, here are a few of the most fabulous indie businesses I’ve bought from lately…

Fox & Kit Café

Bath’s gorgeous parent-friendly café is mine and Freddie’s favourite place in normal circumstances, and while we’re not allowed to visit for lunch right now, not only are they still open for takeaway but they’ve also saved parents all across Bath by inventing the Lockdown Box. There’s a new themed box each weekend, containing a delicious lunch for littles and grown-ups, plenty of extra treats, and several craft activities (plus all the materials you need), so it’s really good value for money – I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Novel Wines

Bath’s resident wine experts, for local, national and international tipples, now have their own shop on Upper Bristol Road, which is still open during lockdown – plus you can get their goodies delivered, too (it’s even free for Bath locals). Whether you want to treat someone to a nice bottle or two for Christmas, or you just fancy treating yourself, it’s definitely worth a visit (you can order online too), and their lovely knowledgeable staff are really good at recommendations if you’re a little spoilt for choice.

The Oyster Shell

We’re all consoling ourselves with a few more takeaways at the moment, right? Local takeaway doesn’t get much better than the Oyster Shell, little sister to the staggeringly popular Scallop Shell restaurant, which serves up the city’s best fish and chips and will now deliver to your home, so you don’t even have to change out of your pjs. I particularly recommend their utterly fabulous fishcakes, with gorgeous garlicky aioli on the side.

The Choux Box

If you’ve ventured up to Alexandra Park for your daily constitutional recently, then you might have seen The Choux Box takeaway stand serving up hot drinks and their stunning freshly-made choux buns (featured image, top – this image is from their Instagram page). Not only are they (almost) too pretty to eat, these beautiful buns feature the most mouth-watering fillings, toppings and flavour combinations. And if you don’t fancy hitting the park, you can get them delivered straight to your door, too.

Mon Cheri

Pick & mix via post? Yes please! This is one of my favourite things to send to loved ones who need a little cheering up – beautiful boxes stuffed with sweetshop favourites, at a super reasonable price. If you need a little cheering up too, they also do FREE same day delivery in Bath if you order before 4pm – how can you possibly resist an offer like that?!

Don’t forget folks, if we want these lovely indie businesses to be there when life goes back to normal (or even when lockdown lifts), then we really need to support them right now, so if you can get a takeaway, order a delivery or buy a gift voucher, then please please do. We’ll certainly notice the difference if they disappear.
