This year, I’ve set myself the challenge of buying as many of my Christmas presents as possible either locally, or from independent businesses, or both! Small businesses really need our support right now, so I want to encourage you to do the same, even if it’s just for a few of your gifts – every little helps.
Let’s face it, if you buy a gift from a lovely indie business, you get a better quality gift, it’s much less likely to be something they already have/something someone else has got them too, you look like a really cool, interesting, creative person, and you support lots of little businesses run by nice people, rather than giving all your money to Jeff Bezos. He doesn’t need it – he’s got plenty already.
So without further ado, here’s a round-up of some of my favourite indie businesses and what they’re offering for Christmas this year. It’s been REALLY hard to narrow it down, and there’s so much more out there, so why not go exploring a little further than Amazon this year and see what you can find?
Toiletries & Pampering: Ubiety
This lovely little company gives you a great gifting double-whammy – not only are their toiletries and pampering products absolutely scrumptious, but all their profits go to Dorothy House Hospice Care, so supporting Ubiety is guaranteed to get you on Father Christmas’s Nice List!
My top recommendation: Ubiety’s wonderful scented candles are a real treat, but all their toiletries are gorgeous too
Thoughtful Gifts: The Positive Planner
This has been a rough old year on absolutely everybody’s mental health, so give the gift of a little self-care with one of the Positive Planner’s beautiful mindful journals. There are several options in the collection, each offering a different way to approach regular journaling for better mental health. They’re also offering 20% off right now!
My top recommendation: the original journal that started it all, the Positive Planner itself – a 12-week journey of daily self-care and positivity
Books: Mr B’s Emporium
Books are my favourite Christmas present – I love matching someone up with their perfect read. I know it’s super easy to order your books from the aforementioned Big Corporate Website, but this year consider supporting one of Bath’s best independent bookshops instead! You can order online for delivery or free local collection, plus they have an amazing collection of gift ideas and experiences for your favourite bookworm.
My top recommendation: Mr B’s Reading Spas, which (Covid-permitting) include tea and cake by the fire in the bookshop, an expert bookseller to suggest new books based on the authors and genres you love, and vouchers to spend on all their recommendations
Creative Gifts: Meticulous Ink
I’m strongly tempted to buy myself a Christmas present from this exquisite little stationer – that’s allowed, right? I particularly love the look of their beautiful Lettering Kits, the at-home version of their always-popular workshops, which contain everything you need to perfect the art of brush, modern or copperplate calligraphy. They offer a whole range of very pretty Christmas cards, too.
My top recommendation: the Modern Lettering Kit, which will teach you how to create four gorgeous alphabets and how to embellish your lettering
Toys: My Small World
I’ve definitely shared my love for My Small World on the blog before, but it’s quite possibly the best toy shop ever, so it deserves more than one mention! Not only is it packed with a carefully curated selection of irresistible toys and books, but the staff know everything about their products and make the best recommendations. I have eight nephews and nieces, as well as my own little boy, so trust me, I’ve spent plenty of time with the lovely My Small World team and you definitely have to check them out. You can order online too!
My top recommendation: the beautiful Maileg mice, or the wooden Djeco play kitchen, or their famous hanging hot air balloons, or the incredible selection of kids’ books… okay, this one is just impossible.
Jewellery & Sparkles: Dakota Rae Dust
A splash of gorgeous colour is what we all need right now, so check out Dakota Rae Dust for absolutely stunning statement jewellery, made with vintage and recycled fabrics. I’m not going to get any more specific because my family do occasionally read my blog if they have nothing else to do (hi guys), but my orders for this year’s Christmas presents have been placed…
My top recommendation: Dakota Rae Dust’s utterly outrageous, utterly gorgeous statement tassel earrings
Homewares & Textiles: Pasha Living
Pasha Living is based here in Bath, but they specialise in importing homewares, textiles and jewellery from small, independent artisans in Turkey. If you’re looking for elegant, high-quality gifts then look no further – you’re guaranteed to find something special in their online shop. You can get 30% off right now too, with the code HOME30!
My top recommendation: their stunning blankets and throws – just what everyone needs to snuggle up this winter
Food/Presents for Difficult People: Taste of Bath
We’ve all got someone on our list who is impossible to buy for, and my number one piece of advice is that you can’t go far wrong with some lovely food and drink. Full disclosure, Taste of Bath are a client of mine, but I genuinely do buy their gorgeous foodie hampers for my lucky loved ones (and I pay full price, I’ll have you know) so this is definitely an honest recommendation. TOB gathers together all the best local food and drink – everything from cheese and charcuterie to chocolate and wine – for their gift boxes. Who doesn’t love a hamper of treats at Christmas?!
My top recommendation: use their Create Your Own hamper service (no extra charge!) to create the perfect personalised gift
